One sarcastic comment cracked me up, it went something like:I don't understand, wasn't the purpose of this tax to make sure people would buy less soda in Philly? The politicians should be happy about this! Anyway, make it more expensive in the city and people will buy them anywhere else. And the rest of their groceries while out there, too. Unless they reverse this soon I predict the city proper will cease to have large grocery stores. And like other, similar fees (bag tax, alcohol, etc) only the Philly poor have to pay it, since everyone else has a car and can afford the time / fuel to make a trip out and buy in bulk. |

Some low income people will probably be saved from diabetes as a result, but it's not clear this is the most cost effective way to produce those health gains. |

"Some low income people will probably be saved from diabetes as a result"I'm not sure that's true. As my own doctor told me, if you have the gene for diabetes, you will get it eventually. Once you reach the pre-diabetic stage, then management of the disorder requires you watch your carbs, especially simple sugars. Then there is the basic hypocrisy of government telling you they care about your health where they really want your money. |

A number of pre-diabetic low income people might stay out of actual diabetes because they are forced by cost to consume less sugar. I am not commenting about the good sense or the honesty of this approach. |

Posted by LuchAAA on Sat Feb 25 12:56:59 2017, in response to Re: Philly Soda Tax, posted by AlM on Sat Feb 25 08:18:55 2017. they should be taxed per gram of added sugar instead instead of by the ounce. What's funny is Philly has a winter which will reduce intake somewhat. In the south, where it's much warmer, sugar intake is going to be much greater. In Florida everyone is walking around with Polar Ice and Big Gulp year round. Be interesting to see how all this plays out when soda and energy drink demand peaks in the summer. If Philly has a t2d problem, it's gotta be far worse in places like Tampa, Atlanta, and Houston. LA has a big t2d problem too. But there are so many people in this country who eat several meals a week at 7-11, Circle K, and Wawa. It's really amazing. |

Do you remember when Bloomberg attacked Atkins. But the Atkins diet was actually created to battle diabetes. Atkins studied a doctor named Banting in the UK. There are even parts of the world where people are on "The Banting Diet" or saying they're "banting". So Bloomberg is attacking sugar and attacking the diabetic diets. Instead he should have tried to find balance between the two. |

I used to think Canada, Australia, New Zealand made better burgers. Now I realize it's just the grass fed free range cattle that makes it tasty all on its own. Elevation Burger opened up shop here, and I am pretty sure it is best chain burger in the world (not fast food as they're made to order).Don't worry I only align with hippie types when the resulting food is genuinely better, which in the case of beef it most certainly is. |
