Lots of factory workers still starting at $10/hour even today. How about, instead of raising minimum wage while devaluing the currency, bringing back the value of the dollar resulting in the purchasing power of wages increasing? |

That's the typical right wing response, but there remains a need for workers at the bottom of the scale. If every worker were qualified for a better position, then it would only result in over-qualified workers at the bottom. |

Keep in mind that those jobs were originally intended (back in the 1960's and 1970's) for kids working summer jobs and after school; they were never meant for full-time adults trying to support a family. Think back to the 1970's - when did you ever see an adult behind the counter other than the manager or assistant manager? |

In terms of purchasing power, it is a reduced wage since it has not kept pace with inflation. The $2.50 that it was in the mid-late 1970's would be about $10 - $11 today. As far as devalued currency goes, unless you are converting to foreign currency for a trip, so what ? We are about the same against Canada as last year, about 77 cents, which is much better than at the height of the financial collapse in the 2009 - 2011 period when it was on par and up to $1.07. The dollar has done fairly well. |
