WD-40 is not a lubricant.

Because it's a water displacement chemical that eventually grips. :)

Did you steal that from Amtrak's Sunnyside yard maintenance shed ?
(49 and 97 went out 5 and 11 hours late yesterday).

Hmm. But my locks work better after I've used WD-40 on them. Perhaps it's working more like a cleaning agent (in the course of getting most of the WD-40 out of the lock to avoid a mess I'm also pulling out dirt, of course.)

What would you recommend as a better lubricant for locks and such ?

That would be the reason. For locks, I'm a big believer in graphite powder rather than oil. But yeah, WD40 is the 40th blend of a water displacement compound created for NASA.

I'd substitute Gorilla Tape for that regular duck tape; but that is personal preference due to experience with both.

The current label of WD-40 claims that it lubricates, among other things. But the label of a few years ago claimed instead that it stopped squeaks.

Why? Does it take longer for them to escape with Gorilla tape? :)

One of the issues is that it really isn't a lubricant, Paraffin may reduce friction a bit but it hardens up eventually becoming an obstacle. Here's what's really in it:

solvent naphtha petroleum, medium aliphatic, > 60%
petroleum base oil as paraffinic distillate, heavy, solvent-dewaxed (severe), 15% to 25%
corrosion inhibitor unregulated, 1% to 10%
wetting agent unregulated, 1% to 10%
fragrance unregulated, 0% to 1%
carbon dioxide, 2% to 3%

So it's mostly solvents with a dash of penetrating oil pretty much.
