They just think that it's a day we celebrate by eating dates and cow chips and shoot off those mini scuds for practice. |

My days upstate precede yours by 25 years. My parents came to New York in July 1950 and spent the summer at the summer house of my mother's childhood friend in far western Greene County. I was born in early 1951 and there's hardly a year I haven't been back.Believe me, when I was young, it was Wonder Bread (and its ilk) or starve. |

He spent his childhood summers two hills further north. I spent much of mine around Indian lake, which was an hour plus north of you both. It was Friehofers or Vermont's Koffe Kup for baked goods. Yeah, you could get Wonder bread, the NYC staple, but why? The local bakeries were so much better. |

My folks had a summer house in southwestern Albany county out route 145 in the hills on a lake. We spend every summer up there instead of the stinking city. That's why when I finally had my fill of the city, I moved up to where I lived as a kid full time.In Albany county though, the Freihofer's bread truck came every other day, the Bordens milk truck came the alternating days and we even had an ice cream truck daily way way out in the sticks. On Saturdays, it would be the once a week 20 mile haul down to Middleburgh to hit up the A&P for supplies. But since bread and milk were delivered, we didn't want any Wonder bread. :) Should have moved a bit further north. You would have LOVED Freihofer's. For a while, you could even find their ORIGINAL stuff in the city. Now that they're owned by Bimbo you can probably find it anywhere down there, but it's gone completely to shit. |

I think though until about 1970 anything west of Windham or Hunter was still the wilderness. That's when the predecessor to the Great American moved from a really small building to a full size market.Better down at lower elevations. :) |

Yeah, it was mostly summer residents, and everything got boarded up for winter. They didn't really do much road plowing either, the locals who lived year round could be counted in the dozens and had snow cats and the like.Middleburgh is over in Schoharie county to give you an idea of the distances, so those trucks were pretty handy. They came door to door for you. But in winter, you were truly on your own. That's why most upstate kitchens are as large as they are, they double as meatpacking plants. Heh. We'd head up this way normally through Saugerties so we could hit up the huge Grand Union in Cairo for long term rations, the A&P in Middleburgh was only moderate-sized but it did the trick. |

If I got it right, I think you would say:Je suis ne le jour du poire (or le troisieme Brumaire) en l'annee cent quatre-vingt et onze. I'm too lazy to figure out how to do accents, so a bold e denotes one with an accent aigu and an italicized e denotes one with an accent grave. The French say "four twenty" for 80, and "four twenty and eleven" for 91. |
