The system, when it comes to police officers killing people like Eric Garner, isn't working. Every young child of color, upon reaching his or her early teens, is given "the talk" by his or her parents about how to deal with cops who automatically assume they are criminals, absent any supporting evidence. White kids don't generally have to fear being accosted, harassed, hurt or killed on G.P., because the police usually look like them. This needs to change, and peaceful protests are the first steps towards such change, just as they have been for the civil- and LGBT-rights movement.What's missing here (and I said this to TIME Magazine last weekend) is a willingness on BOTH sides to have a real dialogue about how thinks can be better handled in the future. Again, advocating killing of cops isn't right, but neither are bombastic statements like "I hope police treat all unidentified fish as sharks". That kind of thinking will just escalate things even more. |

The suspect is said to have killed his girlfriend in Baltimore this morning, before coming to NYC this afternoon to "put wings on pigs", as he posted on Instagram. He specifically referred to the Garner case as a motive, and killed himself just as pursuing cops were about to engage him.I would strongly suggest that the killer's earlier homicide points to his severely deranged state of mind. |

Unfortunately cops have been getting killed bf the protest and unfortunately cops will probably lose their lives in the lime of duty after in the hands of ppl of all walks of life. If it was for peaceful protest and marches blacks and women still wouldn't have the right to vote, workers would still be making pennies and hour. Many positive changes has come as a result of marches and protest and if we (I mean ALL AMERICAN PEOPLE) don't have that right to speak out on something we don't agree we are no better than North Korea. |

(you actually believe that someone who'd just robbed a store and assaulted it's owner, then talked back to a cop and tired to steal his gun, is suddenly going to throw his hands in the air and surrender?) Garner died because he was being an asshole and his poor life choices bit him in the ass at the wrong time. The part that's not addressed is that some police officers actually become agressive/violent without cause for such action. This happens quite a bit, especially in low income, high crime areas, and despite what many say... Most people in these area are law-abiding, and not "anti-police". I grew up in bad areas of the Bronx to working class parents. Although my brother and I knew the dos and don't with police... our parents still cautioned us on what to do and not to do if ever stopped by police. |
