Happy Anniversary |
|
Posted by cortelyounext on Wed Oct 22 21:36:32 2014 Exactly one year ago, I won the Tora! Tora! Tora! thread going away. I remember around that same time the LuchAAA was handily defeating people in the Brooklyn youths thread while simultaneously attacking all comers in some other thread about asylum or something like that. I remain fascinated by the Yom Kippur thread. The Nilet and the Terrapin Station possess what can only be described as a limitless supply of heavy weaponry with a combined throw weight far beyond my ability to comprehend as well as an almost inhuman desire to use it against each other. There is almost a callous disregard for the rest of us as that thread is littered with collateral damage, the detritus of a battle bravely fought. I am content to just stand back and bear witness to the unfolding brutality, a once in a lifetime event. It is a privilege. With one exception, said individuals are the only ones to have never lost a thread. The exception? The Jayman. That guy is a genius. Here |

Right, wrong or indifferent doesn't matter. Lemme explain it this way since I lived there for a while. It's like ALASKA. He who has the better bullshit and "dominates" their opponent wins. Sarah Palin tried it, that's why she had to quit. She lost every thread. :) |

Posted by Express Rider on Thu Oct 23 03:32:13 2014, in response to Re: Happy Anniversary, posted by SelkirkTMO on Thu Oct 23 03:25:00 2014. re: Everybody else pays cashThat phrase jogged in my memory the Jean Shepherd book, "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." You must remember Jean Shepherd's radio shows weeknights, on WOR, and his hour and a half broadcast Saturday night's from the Limelight, when it was still a nightclub. Anybody else on the board remember Jean Shepherd's shows? The TV specials from the mid 70s forward just didn't seem to grab me the way his stories on the radio did. |

Now THERE'S something that the kids would never know about ... something I try to do here often, using just words to let folks conjure up their own images. Sadly, imagination required. :( |

When I owned several radio stations, we actually did 1940's-style radio plays on Sundays with the crew and sound effects, the whole nine yards. And folks enjoyed listening to it. Our Halloween shows in particular were classic revivals of ancient scripts and brand new radio plays by writers and artists. All original stuff although we cheated a bit and recorded them rather than trying to do them live with foley and all.It was SO much fun. But then again, we were a generation that grew up on the cardboard box it came in was often more fun than the product inside it and imagination was everything. Creativity! THIS is precisely the reason why our nation is in the toilet lately for innovation. Folks would rather be couch potatoes and "absorb content" rather than creating anything novel. :( Radio used to be an art form. Now it's only yelling, screaming and car ads. :( |

There were so many more talk shows on radio then. You just spun the dial after 10 pm and were usually able to find something interesting.I moved the dial a little bit to the right of WNEW one night, while seeking either Scott Muni, or Alison Steele, and stumbled upon WBAi and Bob Fass's / Steve Post's Radio Unamable..... you never knew who was going to turn up remember Alan Ginsburg, Abbie Hoffman - I'm pretty sure they were getting high with him in the studio that night (remember it was late '68 or early '69); or some of the cast members of the play "Che" after they were busted for performing in the nude, and then bailed out..... and some great music too - all pretty much free form... |

They won't even let you right-click and save images :( (I think I had discovered a way around that awhile back, but I don't remember it now, or maybe they got wise and eliminated it, or maybe I was imagining things) :)Anyway, if the image fits within my monitor, I just screencap it. |

In part, my schedule does not allow for it but more so I simply became disillusioned with this site over time. Mind you, there are still those who help me learn and make me laugh and that is why I have not left this place altogether. There are good people here. The trains61 graciously offered me a slot on the Lurker's Guild which I accepted. Those slots rarely come open and are highly sought after so I consider myself both fortunate and blessed.
