You mean the textbooks that show history the way it actually was, not the way you libs have whitewashed it by removing Dr. Marlin Luther King and the Holocaust? |

That's way too extreme to believe. Sounds to me like propaganda from the RW echo chamber to mask the truth about what those books really exclude....which is any sign or mention of protest. Kids are not being taught to think about what their government is doing to them. |

It's liberal in that it makes textbooks more politically correct than historically accurate. My biggest complaint about the Texas textbooks is that of the 15 people on the State Board of Education, most are neither historians nor academicians. For example, one Board member is Julie Williams, a graduate of Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado, who works as the manager of a dental office. Seriously? She's qualified to determine what belongs or doesn't belong in a history textbook? More than a dozen professors from Texas colleges and universities volunteered to take part in reviewing texts this past summer. Almost all were turned down. Why? |

What about Marco Rubio refusing to say whether he believes in evolution because he's not a scientist? That's just one of many examples of conservative political correctness. So far you haven't given me any reason to believe that omitting MLK is anything but forgetfulness and lack of proper review. |

As you pointed out, y'all have some real prizes picking out the textbooks and their contents. Are you aware of how that works? It's the publishers that edit the content that appears in textbooks, after the demands of customers for what goes into them. Texas, being the largest individual purchaser of textbooks, gets to make those choices and the publisher gives them (and everybody else) what Texas wants.I suggest that the answer to your divine mystery lies a lot closer to home. |

Didn't you read the article Selkirk linked to? There's PLENTY of examples of texas stupid within. For example:As the board became a national story and a national embarrassment, the state legislature attempted to put a lid on the chaos in 1995 by restricting the board’s oversight to “factual errors.” This made surprisingly little impact when you had a group of deciders who believed that the theory of evolution, global warming, and separation of church and state are all basically errors of fact. Don McLeroy, the board chairman who had opined that “evolution is hooey,” told Washington Monthly that he felt the changes put Texas “light years ahead of any other state when it comes to challenging evolution!” Read it. |

Textbooks these days are written for all school districts in all states now. It's a revenue thing since more modern states are just handing out school ipads with electronic versions. In order to sell textbooks in Texas, those textbooks sold elsewhere generally meet the Texas standards.Texas' Education department sets the specs since they're now the largest single buyer of paper educational materials. |

I think a little more tension on that ejection spring might be in order. :)One of the things about textbooks though is that revisions to them can be years apart. So whatever damage was done is probably still waiting to be printed. But I just wanted to explain that it's not "liberalism" that was behind much of that, it was actually crazies on the other side. Revisionism has only gotten easier since the intertubes came along. :( |

Schools are helpful, but the minute you walk out the door, you're not done. You have to keep educating yourself or you fall WAY behind fast. I left school knowing how to mix chemicals and make lightbulbs light and induction motors spin, as well as how to design TV sets with tubes and transistors. Just a couple of years later, everything I knew was useless.Just one year out of school, I took correspondence courses in integrated circuits and broadcast equipment. Sadly, what they were teaching was even older and more busted than what I learned when I was in school. But I got my first FCC license out of the deal. From there, I made it a point to always be inquisitive. Anything that was new and upcoming was something that I embraced on my own. I wanted to know everything that made it tick, and everything that would stop it from ticking. All of it independent study when I saw something interesting that could be the "next big thing." Learned high power transmitters, communications, fiber optics, computers, programming, satellite, you name it. You can NEVER stop learning or you'll fall behind fast. I'm still seeking out the new, that's why I'm real happy in what I'm doing right now as well. And as always, right on the leading edge of tech. :) |
