Posted by Mitch45 on Tue Apr 22 22:46:10 2014, in response to Who's tired of matzah?, posted by Jeff Rosen on Tue Apr 22 18:33:49 2014. Only partially correct. Although Chometz may be eaten after the end of Passover earlier tonight, one is required to wait until (1) the non-Jewish person you sold your Chometz to prior to Passover sells it back to you or (2) the agent you designated to sell your Chometz for you has had the opportunity to buy it back from the non-Jewish person the agent sold it to. You cannot use or consume your Chometz until either of the above has occurred because the Chometz does not belong to you. If you did not sell or otherwise completely dispose of your Chometz prior to Passover, then you have violated the precept of not owning any Chometz on Passover. |

You (should have) sold your chometz prior to the start of Passover. I know one family who stores it all in a locked closet and sells the chometz and the key to their non-Jewish neighbor. After Passover they buy back the key and the chometz. Going into the closet without buying back the chometz and key would be stealing something that doesn't belong to them. |

Posted by Mitch45 on Wed Apr 23 09:15:21 2014, in response to Re: Who's tired of matzah?, posted by Easy on Tue Apr 22 22:50:47 2014. Let me break it down for you.(1) The law: Jews may not possess or otherwise eat, consume or have any use or enjoyment of Chometz on Passover. This includes food or anything else that may contain leavening. (2) Thus, Jews must dispose of all Chometz in their homes, cars, offices, et al before Passover. (3) To dispose of the Chometz, Jews must either (1) destroy it by burning (2) throw it into a public garbage can (some say that throwing it into a garbage can that you own is not considered "disposition") and/or (3) sell the Chometz to a non-Jew. This must be a real sale - the non-Jew has the right to use any Chometz sold to him over Passover. Refusal to allow the non-Jew to use the Chometz is evidence that the sale was not legitimate and the Chometz is still in the possession of the Jewish person, thus violating the law. (4) After Passover ends, the Jewish person can buy back all of the Chometz sold to the non-Jew. The non-Jew has the right to refuse to sell it back (although that seldom happens). |

But the buyer had to pay 8% tax, and then you had to pay 8% tax. So presumably you had to shell out 16% of the value of the car (plus whatever fee you had to pay the rabbi to handle the deal) to avoid cleaning it. That's quite a bit of money and I bet it still needs cleaning now. I don't enjoy cleaning either but that amount of money (even on an old car) would be an incentive. |
