So, then, you ARE aware that this bill also allows a bank loan officer (Anderson Cooper's excellent example) to deny a loan to a divorced couple, or an unwed mother, because it would violate his "sincerely held religious belief"?

Would you support that?

I don't think that it does allow that. Not exactly. The bank itself, not a random loan officer, would need to take that position. And as we know banks exist to make money, not promote religion. In the real world such a loan officer would be fired.

The law permits individuals AND businesses to refuse goods and services to people based on their religious beliefs. ANYONE can refuse goods or services to anyone else, based on any "sincerely held religious belief". I don't believe the bank, in this example, could force the loan officer to go against his "religious beliefs", any more than a business could force an observant Orthodox Jew to work on the Sabbath..

John McCain and Jeff Flake both call for veto of SB1062

John McCain: I hope Jan Brewer vetoes gay bill

By Marshall Cohen
February 24, 2014, 12:36 PM
Arizona's two Republican senators have urged their governor to veto a controversial measure that gives businesses in the state the right to refuse service to gays based on religious beliefs.

Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake offered Gov. Jan Brewer, R-Ariz., some unsolicited advice on Twitter. McCain on Monday echoed a tweet posted Saturday by Flake that addressed the issue directly: "I hope Governor Brewer will veto #SB1062," the tweets read.

Lawmakers in the GOP-controlled state House and Senate approved the legislation last week. Brewer, a fiery Republican who has embraced controversial laws in the past, hasn't said yet whether she plans to sign the bill. The measure would automatically become law after five days of sitting idly on her desk.

Flake and McCain are not as staunchly conservative as the state lawmakers that proposed and passed the measure.

Yet Monday, Republican state senators Bob Worsley, Adam Driggs and Steve Pierce sent their own letter to Brewer urging a veto just days after they joined the entire 17-member Senate Republican caucus in voting for the bill, the Associated Press reports. "I was not comfortable' with the vote,' Worsley told the AP. "I have not been comfortable with this for some time."

The controversy with this bill highlights the divisions in the Republican Party as it grapples with the changing social landscape.

Supporters of the legislation say it provides much-needed protection for religious organizations and individuals with strong beliefs, especially as same-sex marriage laws are rapidly changing. Religious groups have argued that they should not be forced to provide services to gay people if they are not comfortable doing so because of their beliefs.

Opponents of the bill claim that it effectively legalizes discrimination and does not pass constitutional muster. Business interests don't like the bill and could lead to widespread boycotts. Some have even raised concerns that the economic backlash could hurt Super Bowl XLIX, which will be held in the Phoenix area next year.

Except while incredibly short-sighted I do not believe this law is unconstitutional as written. The law does not require discrimination, just that you cannot be held liable if you do discriminate against LGBT people. Moreover, 14th Amendment does not apply to private citizens. Additionally, discrimination protections at the state level have not been extended to LGBT people when a fundamental right (such as marriage and sex) is not involved

Straight from the horse's mouth....this guy says he made a BIG MISTAKE here:

From theHuffingtonPost.com:

Arizona GOP State Senator Regrets Voting For Anti-Gay SB 1062: 'I Screwed Up'

The Huffington Post | by Amanda Terkel

Posted: 02/24/2014 11:40 am EST Updated: 02/24/2014 4:59 pm EST

Arizona state Sen. Steve Pierce (R) was one of the lawmakers who voted to pass SB 1062, a controversial bill that would allow businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples. He is now saying he made a mistake in supporting the legislation and wants the governor to veto it.

"I screwed up," he told Capitol Media Services Sunday. "I'm trying to make it right."

On Saturday, Pierce also said he didn't like the image and attention Arizona was getting because of the bill.

"I don't like the negative picture of Arizona, and I'm on board asking the governor to veto the bill," Pierce told the Daily Courier.

He added, however, that he didn't like calling the bill "anti-gay."

"To say [the bill is] anti-gay is following the feeding frenzy," Pierce said. "I have friends that are gay and I wouldn't do anything to hurt them. This is blown way out of proportion and it's too bad."

The Arizona state Senate voted along party lines last Wednesday to approve SB 1062. The state House followed up two days later. Supporters say the legislation simply protects the "religious freedom" of individuals, groups and businesses, but it would also allow these entities to refuse service to same-sex couples.

It is now up to Gov. Jan Brewer (R) to sign or veto it. She has not yet indicated what she plans to do.

"You know, the bill is in transmittal and I don’t have to make a decision until next Friday so I’ve got plenty of time," she said Sunday at the National Governor’s Association meeting.

The business community has come out strongly against the bill, with the tourism industry especially worried about the effects it could have on the state ahead of the Super Bowl, which is set to be held in Glendale, Ariz., in 2015.

In recent weeks, multiple states have been pushing these anti-gay bills, although they have not advanced as far as in Arizona.

The problem with the law is not that it allows for LGBT citizens to be treated differently from heterosexual citizens, but rather the standard that it permits is too vague and allows for selectively targeting LGBT citizens.

There is no way in the law to determine whether there was a religious belief or just a hatred of homosexuals in refusing the service. What if a bakery makes a cake for the remarriage of a woman who is divorced and has an out of wedlock child? Can that bakery simultaneously claim the protection of this law when they refuse to bake a cake for an LGBT wedding?

I have no problem with immunizing private entities who the Courts have said are not covered by the 14th Amendment, but my issue with the Arizona legislation is too flexible and appears to only apply to those who refuse service to LGBT citizens.

I was just seeing if a baker who refused to bake a cake for an LGBT wedding because it violated "Christian" beliefs (I used quotes because every denomination has its own beliefs) can claim protection under SB1062 if the baker willingly baked a wedding cake for a divorced person with an out of wedlock child (which also violates "Christian" beliefs)

I knew a Christian woman that worked for an orthodox Jewish attorney and she didn't get any Christian holidays off, not even Christmas Day. She eventually quit.
