Yes and no. Certainly an underlying long term decline in manufacturing. But:

Much lesser percentage-wise population decline.

No dependence on a single manufacturing industry.

Ongoing income from tourism, agriculture, universities, and second-home-owners (in central NY).

Not the huge concentration of poverty and associated crime.

Less demarcation between inner city in disastrous shape and suburbs fairly prosperous. More mobility - more of the poor have cars which let them get to suburban jobs.

Probably more state aid and state employment per capita (I'm guessing at this one).

Employment opportunities nearly in PA gas fields (and in NY if NY ever adopts regulations similar to those in PA).

Politics no doubt contributed to the contracts being issued to both of the aforementioned companies. Plus someone screwed up the rates so that middle class Americans got large premium increases and higher deductibles.

I'd actually argue that whenever there is a public / private partnership things don't go well as you have the balancing act of the public good vs. the needs of a business owner or corporation to make profits and/or increase shareholder value. Either let it be 100% private (with a 100% public program to help those left out by the private system) or make it 100% public.

As a middle class American, I'm increasingly bitter about the fact that nobody in the government or politics really gives a damn about me. It was especially evident when I lived in California where I could live comfortably if I was dirt poor (due to generous government assistance and subsidies) or if I was filthy rich but I couldn't live comfortably being middle class.

You really can't do that. The way campaign financing works these days you are almost obligated to give the contract to whomever donated the most money. We can only start doing performance based contracts at the federal level if we had campaign finance reform.

Yup...luckily I got married and now can be under my wife's insurance..... as my healthcare otherwise due to obamacare on Jan 1st would have went from $459.00 quarterly to $430.00 monthly as my old plan (after 20 years) didn't "comply with the new healthcare law". That's a triple increase thanks to obamacare. I would be fuming if I didn't get married.

Actually, let's put that in perspective for you then. We had SHIT insurance and were paying $1800 a month for the two of us before Obamacare happened. So let's double up your price there and it's still less than half price compared to buying your own insurance under the old system. And I'll bet a lot more things are covered than under that old plan too. Somebody was subsidizing that very low cost you had, probably your employer, so socialism was working out pretty good for you before, but then (drum roll, please) ... these are "republican times" and your employer is now competitive by dumping your insurance.

I'll bet THEY'RE happy and that's what matters these days. :)

That's always been a problem with insurers, we've had to do that dance with them for years. Like bingbong said, gotta call the doctors you have and find out what they take. The insurers usually have web pages that will list who is IN their "network" but it's a LOT of research to figure out which way to go. And the insurance companies consider that info "proprietary" so chances are the government couldn't get their hands on it anyway.

Those websites are also notorious for incorrect information. They don't update as network providers change. Even within a practice, one provider may accept different insurers than others, and this either gets lost or incorrectly applied to others in the group.

Hmm. My 2 grown sons just got on Obamacare. We went to the websites of a couple of the better known insurers and easily found their listing of network doctors and hospitals. They were all neatly categorized by level of Obamacare plan (silver, bronze, etc.) and specialty of the doctor. You can also call the insurers or the doctors directly.
