Atheists, Humanists Suffer Persecution, Discrimination All Over the World

Atheists around world suffer persecution, discrimination: report
By Robert Evans | Reuters

GENEVA (Reuters) - Atheists and other religious skeptics suffer persecution or discrimination in many parts of the world and in at least seven nations can be executed if their beliefs become known, according to a report issued on Monday.
The study, from the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), showed that "unbelievers" in Islamic countries face the most severe - sometimes brutal - treatment at the hands of the state and adherents of the official religion.
But it also points to policies in some European countries and the United States which favor the religious and their organizations and treat atheists and humanists as outsiders.
The report, "Freedom of Thought 2012", said "there are laws that deny atheists' right to exist, curtail their freedom of belief and expression, revoke their right to citizenship, restrict their right to marry."
Other laws "obstruct their access to public education, prohibit them from holding public office, prevent them from working for the state, criminalize their criticism of religion, and execute them for leaving the religion of their parents."
The report was welcomed by Heiner Bielefeldt, United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, who said in a brief introduction there was little awareness that atheists were covered by global human rights agreements.

The IHEU - which links over 120 humanist, atheist and secular organizations in more than 40 countries - said it was issuing the report to mark the U.N.'s Human Rights Day on Monday.
According to its survey of some 60 countries, the seven where expression of atheist views or defection from the official religion can bring capital punishment are Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
The 70-page report lists no recent cases of actual execution for "atheism" -- but researchers say the offence is often subsumed into other charges.
In a range of other countries - such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait and Jordan - publication of atheist or humanist views on religion are totally banned or strictly limited under laws prohibiting "blasphemy".
In many of these countries, and others like Malaysia, citizens have to register as adherents of a small number officially-recognized religions -- which normally include no more than Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam.
Atheists and humanists are thereby forced to lie to obtain their official documents without which it is impossible to go to university, receive medical treatment, travel abroad or drive.

In Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin and North America, countries which identify themselves secular give privileges to or favor Christian churches in providing education and other public services, the IHEU said.
In Greece and Russia, the Orthodox Church is fiercely protected from criticism and is given pride of place on state occasions, while in Britain bishops of the Church of England have automatic seats in the upper house of parliament.
While freedom of religion and speech is protected in the United States, the report said, a social and political climate prevails "in which atheists and the non-religious are made to feel like lesser Americans, or non-Americans."
In at least seven U.S. states, constitutional provisions are in place that bar atheists from public office and one state, Arkansas, has a law that bars an atheist from testifying as a witness at a trial, the report said.

That's absolutely right and needs to be addressed. even here in the US, freedom FROM religion is just as much a part of the 1st Amendment as freedom of religion.

That Arkansas law has to be struck down for one. Same for the laws barring non-religious from public office. That also is unconstitutional. State governments are supposed to hew to the Federal Constitution WRT rights it conveys to all citizens. Or else, let's ban guns in NY, k?

News Flash: Almost anyone who is not part of the dominant or official religion suffer persecution, discrimination all over the world.

Especially people like atheists and Jevohah's witnesses who tend to advertise their beliefs. And their are some countries where Christians aren't very well tolerated.

According to its survey of some 60 countries, the seven where expression of atheist views or defection from the official religion can bring capital punishment are Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

Those seven countries have something in common. What could it be? What could it be?

Huh? Atheists tend to advertise their beliefs?

On the streets of NYC every day, I see numerous people who are announcing by their attire that they are Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, or Muslims. I don't remember the last time I saw someone announcing that they were an atheist.

Agreed, but it's not as big a problem as it would have been had they been enforced. It's people's attitudes that's the problem and spiffying up legal codes isn't going to solve that problem.

1. You're talking about New York City, where there is little novelty to diverse people.

2. By "advertise their beliefs" I mean to say that some atheists, like some proselytizing other religionists, what to win others over to their beliefs. This is not well tolerated in a lot of places.

What I'm saying is that persecution of atheists is not novel among the world's dislikes.

It is not in the nature of atheists to "proselytize". That motive belongs expressly to religionists. When questioned, they will present a reasoned argument, but that do not by nature seek to impose upon anyone.

how about the ritual of being annoying prudes to anyone who doesn't agree with you, looking down on them for being "ignorant". What you do with your life is your own choice, no one should have the right to judge you for that. Not being mocked for what you bealive in is a two way street. If they want acceptance, they need to understand they have to live in a world where there are people who will never agree with them and that such people will always exist. Which is also something a lot of people here need to understand about life in general.

If atheists want to be treated better, they need to cease being such douchebags, at least the kind that get offended whenever someone puts a Nativity out, or a cross, or anything else remotely religious on government property. They also need to accept that they have their own fundamentalist movement which tolerates absolutely no dissenting viewpoint.

Atheism is also a religious belief. Any definitive definitions of God, be it form or of mere existence is a matter of faith. The only truly irreligious position is agnosticism.

Atheism is not a religion. Where did you get the idea that a school of thought that does not enforce, dictate or impose a moral code is defined as religion? Beliefs and faith, where applicable, have nothing to do with dogma. It is dogma that defines religion. In other words:

Wrong.

And no, religious displays have no place on public property. That's what private property, like your church's lawn, is for.

I wonder if atheists are offended when they sneeze and someone says, "God bless you"?

Agnostic is an adjective, not a noun. One can be an agnostic theist or an agnostic atheist. You're confusing gnostic atheism with atheism in general.

And I oppose nativity scenes and crosses on public property as an American sworn to defend the Constitution, not as someone offended by such displays in general.

only an asshole would since anybody who says "God bless you" after a sneeze says so out of habit and not religious belief.

It's like when people say "JESUS CHRIST!!" in certain moments.
They don't even realize they're saying it.

Exactly.

Those common expressions lack any religious context which makes them acceptable to anybody that's not a real douchebag.
