My Uncle Joe was in college in Birmingham in the 1930's.He played in a Jazz band on weekends to help pay for his education. One night his combo was playing in a bar frequented by Klansmen. From the back of the room, someone yelled HEY - JEEEEEW! My uncle put down his horn and began running for his life. When he turned around, he caught sight of the black drummer running past him. My uncle yelled out, "Hey, where you going?" To which the drummer replied, "I'm not waiting until they call my name!" So much for life as a Jew in the south in the 30s. I suspect that my uncle took some literary license in telling the story. |
