Today I was talking to a former coworker and she was explaining that where she lives in OC (a very nice and fairly expensive area) will soon start accepting students from Santa Ana into their schools. It has something to do with no child left behind.The test scores at the schools in her area are really high so they have a program that will allow students from schools that test really low to transfer to schools designated "choice" schools which are the high achieving ones. At first they decided to require that students provide their own transportation (which would be hard for parents in Santa Ana where most kids walk to school), but now the district has said that they may bus students in. She's especially worried because the criteria for admitting students will be income based. Kids that have parents with the lowest income get admitted first. So they'll have the poorest kids from the worst schools in the worst area of the county going to their schools and they are freaking out. |
