Richard Lynn actually wrote two books about this. Among whites, maybe the very wealthiest are reproducing fine (Donald Trump has five kids after all—by three different women), I'll check that later, but middle to upper classes whites are reproducing below the replacement value (~2.1 children per childbearing women over a lifetime), which means the white population is shrinking.This is not unique to the States but is found among all whites the world over. Many European countries suffer from static or shrinking populations (Russia's population has been shrinking for a while now). This is true of East Asian countries as well, although they are all so crowded they could stand for it—except when the bill for caring for their seniors comes due). The reasons for this are multi-faceted. The biggest reason is simply the presence of birth control. As J.P. Rushton pointed out, whites and E. Asians tend to reproduce with a more relatively K-strategy than other races—quality over quantity. This means heavy investment in each offspring to maximize their status. Birth control gives middle/upper class people the option to put off having kids until the time is right; since things can always get better, that time often ends up being never. The other major problem is the unfriendly environment mothers find in the workplace, especially as careers get more high-powered (since, really, it is women who are the determining factor of the birth rate). Abundance evidence shows that having children puts women at a disadvantage career-wise, something most of us know from common sense. Having children is time consuming, leaving less time to devote to education/career, also taking time off to have children leaves women open having their jobs compromised, passed up for promotions or thrown away entirely. So, for the long-term health of the country, we need to encourage successful people—of all races—to reproduce more and encourage less successful to reproduce less. One obvious solution (yes, socialist ideas follow) is make the workplace more women friendly, by mandating parental leave (for both sexes, to prevent employers from having an incentive to hire men), career freezes, and free or in-house daycare. Maybe even the copying the French government-sponsored house maids. |
