There's nothing wrong with it, but it just seems a bit too excessive to me, just like how a lot of Puerto Ricans like to hang their flag outside of their apartment windows

The difference there is that the Puerto Rican flag isn't the United States flag, the flag of the country. The Puerto Rican flag is somewwhat like displaying the New York flag , of which I barely even know what it looks like. I know, there's an ethnic thing involved there too, but in theory, it's similar.
