If we had a true World Series or Major Leaguers in the Olympics, I think that we would have been able to establish a rivalry with Japan and Cuba.Because of self-indulgence, near-sighteness and plain stupidity, MLB had done a poor job at internationalizing the sport and their refusal to allow MLers got it booted out of the Olympics. In contrast, the NBA (and other factors) have made basketball the second most popular team sport in the world after soccer. A big reason for this was allowing pros to play in the Olympics. Basketball was already popular before that, but watching the best finally compete against one other took it to a new level. |
