As for "bad" areas....if you want to compare to South Central, LI has some suburban slums like Roosevelt, Wyandanch, Freeport, Gordon Heights, Coram Hill, Hempstead, and others.

If those places are slums then they are worse than South Central as I don't consider South Central to be a slum. I guess that a large part of it is a so-called ghetto (not like the east coast), but it has many, many suburban style neighborhoods with well kept homes and manicured lawns. It doesn't even have much crime compared to major east coast cities. Just a higher than average number of murders and violent crimes because of gangs, but that's been getting better for the most part.
