Kraft obtained the brand in 1992 and trashed it. Despite the name, their clientele were Jews because their products were pareve. Kraft thought they could save some bucks by using milk chocolate. Sales plummeted and never recovered even after the old recipe was restored.

Star of Gold....could have been called Star of David, I guess... :)

Reading over some history, your description definitely seems accurate.

This is more a case of incompetent management than selfish union workers. However, the former are given a free pass by the media and tax breaks by the government.

This does seem now to me like an uphill battle even for the private equity firm; after the post-Kraft dip below clientele threshold, it seems like not much could really save them, not even the proposed cuts.

And to think that I always thought that they researched product line changes to death.

Makes me wonder what B-school curriculum is like, and how much of it carries over into the real world.
