What you suggest is sort of like modern Europe. In most countries, all "marriages" are civil, i.e., civil unions. If a couple chooses to have a religious ceremony, of course they can but it's purely symbolic and has no "legal" meaning.In fact, it's sort of true here, too. The religious ceremony is meaningless unless there's a signed marriage license which is issued by the government. The difference here is that the clergy's signature contributes to the validity of the license. And, of course, the clergyperson has to be registered with the civil authorities to officiate at the ceremony. |
