I don't attend sporting events. I've never eaten at a McDonald's. I've never been to church on Sunday.I don't attend the Opera, but if someone were hawking tickets outside Lincoln Center, I could read that they are printed in English and not buy them even though the hawker is yelling "KHLAV KHALASH!" while holding up the tickets. At least McDonald's puts a sign up in English, and has an internationally-recognized trademark that will allow you not to mistake a McDonald's for a ShangChai (Kosher Chinese place in Brooklyn, which marks itself as "KOSHER CHINESE FOOD" in case some hungry anti-Semite wondered what the hell ShangChai was supposed to signify). Churches have an internationally-recognized symbol that adorns their sanctuaries so that once you see it you can avoid it. No problems there. There is no need to renounce your citizenship because you don't participate in many "cultural" mores of our society. But you don't establish your own mores to the exclusion of others by advertising them out of reach of the mainstream. |
