The immigrant is at a disadvantage if he or she doesn't learn English. Of course, I can hardly fault someone who doesn't have time to learn English because he or she is working 12 hours a day six days a week at some menial job.But the truth is that even if they don't learn English there children will. What's more, their bilingual children will most likely produce grandchildren who speak only English. This is what most studies of immigrant populations carried out by linguists have shown. Even the Spanish language doesn't seem to survive past the first generation, the experts say. Mark |
