Re: Boeing Grounds Dangerous New 787

Posted by cortelyounext on Wed Jan 22 10:20:30 2025, in response to Boeing Grounds Dangerous New 787, posted by LuchAAA on Wed Sep 15 19:28:02 2010.

I noticed you left The Honorable Messenger WillD off your List of Liberals and the Giannini Crew List, most likely an oversight in both cases. I once caught him posting an article from Salon in a political thread.

WillD, along with you, JayZeeBMT, Dave from the Metroplex, trains61, mtk, and that Phoenix Sky Harbor guy who once posted a picture from a log cabin on a juniper-covered Arizona mountain ridge, knows a lot about aviation.

WillD:

"It's a supercritical wing with a raked wingtip. The supercritical wing creates less drag at low transonic speeds, where airliner's spend most of their time in the air. The raked wingtip reduces wake vortices, improving lift and reducing parasitic drag."

cortelyounext (a generational talent much like Jayman, who is a genius):

"As for the 787, that thing is dangerous. Check this clip out of the initial flight and you can clearly see something that looks like a piece of rope and a little ball trailing off the top of the tail. Somebody told me pilots refer to that debris as FOD (Foreign Object Damage) but apparently it got stuck on the tail and the airplane took off before anybody could get it."

WillD

"You are kidding, right? I'm way too goddamned tired to try to determine if this is sarcasm. It's pretty clearly a small ballute there to illustrate the vortices coming off the top of the tail. As the aircraft goes through testing they'll also be placed on the wingtips."

LuchAAA

"The chances of dying in a plane crash are far greater than the stupid stats would indicate. They measure in miles and flights instead of aircraft... God bless the fools who fly... Something dangerous happens every FUCKING day."

For inexplicable reasons, there are still people on this board who do not get it.
