However, it turned out to be an extraordinary gaffe as the migrant Jose Ibarra entered the United States from Venezuela illegally in September 2022 under the Biden-Harris administration. He was arrested for the murder of Laken Riley on February 22 after being vetted and released by the current administration. '[Kamala Harris] is the only candidate who has actually endorsed a bill that would hold down immigration any given year to a certain point and then made sure we gave people a decent place to live, didn't divide people from their children. And we did total vetting before people got in. Now, Trump killed the bill,' he stated. 'You got a case in Georgia not very long ago, didn't you? They made an ad about it, a young woman who had been killed by an immigrant?' Clinton asked. Clinton spoke about the issue immigration and Riley's high-profile murder on the campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris in Georgia. The Trump campaign reacted strongly to the news of Riley's murder, blaming it on the Biden-Harris administration and their failure to secure the border. Trump phoned the parents of Riley after her murder and even met with them before a campaign rally. Laken Riley would be alive today if Joe Biden had not willfully and maliciously eviscerated the borders of the United States and set loose thousands and thousands of dangerous criminals into our country,' Trump said during a campaign rally in March. 'To her family tonight. I promise you I will demand justice for Laken. Justice for Laken.' Congressional Republicans highlighting Riley's death successfully goaded President Biden to 'say her name' during his State of the Union address in March. During his speech, Biden raised a white button with Riely's name on it given to him by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and said her name, even though he was accused of pronouncing it incorrectly. 'Killed by an illegal,' he added. Biden later expressed regret for describing the murder suspect as an illegal. 'I shouldn't have used illegal, it's undocumented,' he told MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart afterwards. When Capehart asked, 'So, you regret using that word?'
