A sting from a Portuguese man-of-war can be painful and cause a number of symptoms, including:

Pain: The most immediate result of a sting is pain that can last up to 20 minutes

Welts: A lash-like welt or red, stringy welts can appear on the skin

Rash: A rash that may come and go for up to six weeks

Other symptoms: Chest pain, difficulty breathing, nausea, myalgia, headache, chills, or pallor

Although rarely deadly to humans, a sting from a Portuguese man-of-war can have serious effects. Deaths may result from allergic reactions to the venom or from cardiovascular incidents.
