It's much more costly to occupy a hostile territory than to conquer it. The US discovered this in Iraq and Afghanistan

It's not bothering Russia WRT Ukraine.

It's not costly when you're actually victorious and beat the opposing military forces too, not to mention stop neighboring hostile nations (e.g. Iran). That was not done in either Afghanistan or Iraq.

Your comparisons to Israel are absurd.
