So no police unions bothered to organize private pension schemes, which could have been bigger than what a public pension could have been?

Ah, now you're a pension expert.

Please explain what you are thinking of, in terms of a purely union-organized pension (that is, not collectively bargained). What section of ERISA covers that? Are contributions to it pre-tax, like employer contributions to a public pension plan or a multiemployer pension plan?
