This puts DeSantis in an interesting and possibly no-win situation.1. If he acts to head off violence by calling out the National Guard to make sure Trump's tourists don't get lost and ransack the courthouse, then he risks losing those very supporters. DeSantis' hope for the nomination lies with getting the overwhelming support of Trump's followers. 2. If he sits on his hands and does nothing, then he exposes himself as a person who is enabling Trump's attempts to overthrow the government through force and violence. 3. Biden can force the issue in advance by publicly asking DeSantis to provide National Guard troops in advance of the court session. 4. Biden could nationalize the Guard and take control away from DeSantis if DeSantis refuses, like Eisenhower did in Little Rock. 5. Biden could let the violence take place. This should scare many in the judicial branch to think twice about their "commitment" to originalism. Anyone see a winning strategy for DeSantis? |
