Actually, if you're on public assistance, Medicaid covers ambulance service. You also know it's completely normal for family members to accompany the patient toml the ER in the ambulance. In fact, sometimes that's part of patient care, because having a loved one with the patient during transport makes the experience less stressful for the patient.

As for "illegals" receiving care they don't pay for, such patients are a tiny fraction of the total call volume in a big system like NYC, and generally speaking, those (few) trips are covered by HHC's charity fund, which predates that agency by about a century. Undocumented immigrants are usually wary of using any government service, even FDNY, unless it can't be avoided.

Oh, and God forbid you get hit by a car while walking along one of those streets we all pay for, the same bus that treats Juanito will also come get you. That's another reason the service should be a straight-up tax levy, like the suppression side of FDNY is.
