It wasn't "foundational" to what the United States became. It started out as a relatively minor aspect of our history. But yes, African slaves were imported in 1619 to what became the United States. And since slavery is certainly a form of oppression, and many blacks continue to feel oppressed, then yes, saying there have been "400 years of oppression" is not inaccurate. |
