Interesting, an ASU campus in USC and UCLA's back yard. These things happen. In my waning days at USC, the bookstore started doing custom publishing. basically, instead of the preofessor requesting textbooks, which were then sent to the store to be processed and put on the shelf (and costing the bookstore many $$$ in shipping costs), the prefessor would submit notes/course outlines/etc to the bookstore, which would print and bind them and then sell them, at a reduced cost to the students and the bookstore. At first it was only for USC courses, but then they started doing it for other schools, including UCLA and Stanford. My very last trip to the Bay Area in September 1997 was generated by this. We were using a room in one of the Stanford buildings, I flew up along with the Associate Director in charge of textbooks and custom publishing. I was the Sales Audit Manager for the bookstore, under my purview was deposit procedures for all remote stores. The AD and I met with the on-site manager, and we all went to the local B of A to discuss the proper procedures. This took all of 2 hours on a Friday morning, I had the rest of Friday and all of Saturday to run around the Bay Area (was flying back to LA Sunday morning). I probably could have handled my part with a few phone calls, maybe some e-mails, but I wanted a free tip to the Bay Area (it was my 10th in 9 years). I considered it a reward for all my hard work over 20 years (part-time while in school, full-time thereafter). Glad I did, I had no idea at the time, it would be my last trip to the Bay Area (so far) and by the same time next year, I had relocated to South Florida. I have no idea how much outside custom publishing USC is doing these days.Aviation section: Flew LAX-SJC-LAX on a pretty nice LCC, Reno Air. They had a policy that you could upgrade from coach to first class at the gate for $25.00 (subject to availability) USC paid the coach fare and I paid the upgrade both ways. Had a MD-87 going, and an MD-90 returning. Alas, Reno Air was acquired and dismantled by an Asshole Legacy Airline (in this case, AA) a few years later. :( |
