Mathematical models said had we started 2 weeks sooner, 64,000 lives would have been saved.A huge number of deaths occurred in NYC, and NYC did not really close down until March 16th (last day of school was 3/13, last day for bars and restaurants was 3/16). No one really had a good idea of how contagious this virus was until about a week earlier, and subway usage was already rapidly dropping off on Monday, 3/9. Schools didn't start announcing closures until 3/10, and weren't usually immediate but were schedule for a few days into the future. So on what basis would anyone have made a decision to close all NYC schools on 2/28 instead of 3/13? PS. I agree that the federal government wasted a month not building up supplies of PPE, but you were referring more to distancing. No country did well with testing early on. |
