Because if people see they're about to choose between selecting a schoolyard bully or someone who rambles incoherently to go up against America's enemies on the world stage, the bully suddenly looks a lot better.

As Biden debates Trump, people (consciously or not) will picture him up against America's enemies on the world stage, because Trump is the closest thing to a true adversary he will face during this election season.
