They are only required to build a lead shielded foundation for the market-rate low-income towers. I couldn't get that deal for properties that I own. In reality the radium deposits are probably harmless. But the company that was there (Acme Atomic Specialties) may have had other radioactive products and byproducts. They were specially licensed to sell uranium and plutonium to manufacturers of military equipment before the federal government stopped the practice in 1963. No one knows how much they sold because they kept lousy records. They relocated to Alabama in 1967 to a larger and safer facility and have since gone out of business. |
