We don't let people with active TB run amok in the streets, because we recognize the state's compelling interest in ensuring public health. Likewise, the state does have a legitimate interest in making sure children aren't exposed to preventable communicable diseases. The perceived right of parents to opt out of having their kids inoculated isn't superior of the community's collective right to have their kids be safe from horrifying illnesses that medical science knows how to prevent.I cannot think of too many things worse than being a mother or father watching their child die horribly from a disease we conquered long ago, because of a decision made for the child that was clearly not in their best interest. If too many parents choose not to have their children vaccinated, we might see a resurgence of maladies we thought eradicated. Mandatory vaccinations are a right and proper application of municipal authority. |
