Not to mention that if the EC had been abolished before 2016, Trump may well have won the popular vote through a successful GOTV campaign in the presently useless states.

I think the idea of people not voting because their state is a foregone conclusion is highly overrated. NY and CA had huge turnouts even though everyone knew who would win those states.
