The earths magnetic field is more powerful than anyone can imagine. Your TV set with a picture TOOB is a primary example....you never move it...but when you do...it has initial problems with color. What happens is that the TOOB is sensitive to line-up of earths magnetic field and a coil of wire surrounding it charges up to DeGauss (de-magnetize) the TOOB and chassis everytime you turn on the TV. I used to repair RGB monitors which required CONVERGANCE adjustments (how the red/green/blue electron flow strikes the phosphor screen) which was done by adjusting magnets on the neck of the KINESCOPE (picture tube....Cathode Ray Tube.)

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) and PLASMA displays do not have magnetic deflection because they are electrically controlled. The one thing about the big glass CRTs is that they are rugged...you can punch the screen and even fire a BB at it with no more than a scratch. Don't try that with your computer flat screen LCD...easy to crack the thin glass screen.

New Train Technology T/O cabs utilise touch screen LCD displays. The screen is covered by a pressure sensitive membrane which is sensitive to surface pressure....your finger. While I have never encountered a cracked LCD screen, I have encountered scratches that interfered with sensing the pressure of ones finger...the scratch cannot be recalibrated in maintainance...the whole display mut be replaced.
