This is naïve bullshit. The south (besides some Virginians) was generally lukewarm to the idea of independence and would have remained loyalist before abandoning slavery.Independence wasn’t as popular as you think it was. Despite their lukewarm support for independence, the South fought for its independence thanks to the compromise you decry and without their support, independence would have been dead. |
