I'm actually surprised that Buttigeig has generated such a following, given he is a Mayor (as opposed to a Congressperson or Governor, for example) and is openly gay. He has, so far, overcome these political obstacles handsomely, with adroit handling of the media and issues of the day. Absent a major scandal or misstep, he could do well.

Is middle America ready for such a candidate? Possibly. After all, they elected Trump, who was (and still is) supremely unqualified for the office. Buttigeig at least has municipal experience, and is a sober, thoughtful elected official. He most certainly could be a Trump-slayer, if some people can get past their homophobia.
