Re: Dow plunges 666 points — steepest point decline since 2008 financial crisis

Posted by Dave on Fri Feb 2 23:12:54 2018, in response to Dow plunges 666 points — steepest point decline since 2008 financial crisis, posted by https://salaamallah.com/ on Fri Feb 2 18:54:49 2018.

The market has seasonal weakness from the last week of January through mid-February, so a pullback was not a surprise. The recent rate of climb was not sustainable.

The strong employment numbers today stoked fears of inflation returning and the Fed possibly raising rates four times this year, rather than three. The 10-year Treasury Bond rate is now above 2.8% and at 3% (assuming it stays there), the asset allocators at institutional investment firms start shifting money from equities into bonds, as the risk-adjusted return of equities starts to even out with fixed income investments. That could lead to a larger pullback in the stock market.
