When New York City took over the subways, it was well-known that maintaining the nickel fare was unrealistic and unworkable. The nickel-fare agreement that the private operators signed was, in retrospect, a bad business decision. As to the city "ceasing" all new subway construction, that, too, is false. Following the mandatory delay caused by WWII, the city almost immediately built to Euclid Avenue on the Fulton Street IND, connected Church Avenue's IND station to the Culver el, extended the Queens Blvd. IND to 179th Street, connected the Liberty Ave. el to the Fulton IND, and converted the southern (RR eastern) portion of the LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch to subway operation. Oh, and as for "government swooping in" to take over passenger rail, Amtrak has done yeoman service with the Northeast Corridor (whose trains now reach as far as Roanoke, Va.), in spite of all the obstacles and challenges with which the passing years have placed in their way. Oh, and the PRR electrification of the NEC, which made everything possible, was one of FDR's New Deal projects... Good enough for government work. |
