Total idiocy. The birth of the Electoral College was concurrent with the creation of free states, and the first in the eighteenth century to boot, inspiring the British Empire to ban slavery in the subsequent century. It also led to the eventual abolition of slavery in the US.

So-called "popular vote" is concurrent with a return of slavery.
