That was then and this is now. Looking back into history we can rationalize why people did what they did at the time.
There's no reason why we need to glorify them in the current time space and it's perfectly logical to right a wrong where a wrong has been done.
It is also part of nature to adapt and evolve. Once you realize the fact that a guy is a douche bag then it seems really silly to keep a statue of him standing.
