When I was in law school, my best friends were all Gentiles (Roman Catholics mostly). Although my school must have been 70% Jewish, I had very few Jewish friends. I always felt that they somehow felt threatened or were uncomfortable with the fact that I was Orthodox. There was one girl who would never talk to me unless she could mix in a Yiddish word or two. There was another who used to ask me if it was OK with me if she ate a ham sandwich while I was in the room. Silly.Religion is, or should be, a personal thing. I don't judge anyone else by their level of religiosity or observance. All I ask that you be a nice person and don't try to force me to be something I'm not. If you want to bring a ham hock to a Seder, knock yourself out. Just don't bring it to mine. |
