When I was a cop nobody wanted to sit guarding a body for hours and the supervisors certainly didn't want to lose the manpower so we would try to get their physician to agree to sign a death certificate over the phone without even seeing the body. Then we could have the family call a funeral home to pick it up. They would show up really fast so the family wouldn't have time to change their mind and call a competitor. If no doctor would sign or an autopsy was needed we'd have to wait hours, maybe two shifts, for the ME to show and then more time for the morgue to show. |
