The GBU-28 bombs (perhaps EGBU-28s with a GPS package) we gave to Israel to quiet their talk of developing nuclear bunker buster bombs is a capable penetration bomb. But when it comes to a bunker inside a mountain even the GBU-28 really can't do much more than forcibly relocating a few trees. To do some damage in that case you need something like the USAF's GBU-57 MOP or Next Generation Penetrator, both of which can only be delivered by a heavy bomber, most likely a B-2. As Israel has none of those assets in their arsenal it stands to reason their capabilities with their F-15I Ra'ams and KC-707s are rather moot. Also, flying a non-stealthy asset into the middle of Iran's air defense network is probably going to end poorly. Israel got a bit lucky with Operation Opera because the Iranians had already unsuccessfully struck the Osirak reactor and the Iraqis were looking east for another attack. The threat axis for any attack on Iran's is bound to be to the south and west, and the Iranians are unlikely to be caught napping as the Iraqis were. |
