We both know that in the real world, in public schools it is an ideal - largely the exception to the rule. I've had significant experience in the NYC High Schools both in a teaching capacity and working with the NYCT apprentice program. The fact is young people largely seek peers in their own ethnic groups. Of course there are exceptions especially when based on a common interest such as trains but they are the exceptions. The extreme end-product are the gangs that fight it out daily in the halls. Those same gangs are moving out of the city into the suburbs now. |
