As has already been shown, the chance of surviving a combat deployment to Vietnam is comparatively high.

And the chance of surviving military service during the period of Vietnam combat (which better represents the risks of being drafted) was over 99%, which is not just comparatively high, but very high. There were probably some neighborhoods of LA where the chances of surviving at that age weren't any better.
