Your sentence is logically correct, because it is properly qualified. Nilet's sentence is flat out wrong.

However, even your sentence overemphasizes a fairly small effect. 60,000 out of 9 million soldiers died in Vietnam. Less than 1%. More if you consider after-effects, but still not huge.
