Here's what I would suggest for safety. Do your banking on ANOTHER browser, and if you're not up to "safe hex" (knowing the ins and outs of security) then using something like Midori (www.midori.org) or even Firefox JUST for banking ought to keep you safe without a learning curve. What you want to do is isolate important stuff from IE which can install malware without you ever knowing it went in there.

Don't open emails with attachments, Windows by default only shows you the name of an attached file, not what KIND it is (it's called "file extensions" and they turn those off) and never ever ever download anything such as "you need to update your XXXX in order to view this content" when you visit a site.

This college site has some good basics for ya ... they recommend particular security software that I don't particularly think is the best, but the general advise will be useful at least.
