In many places, the big parties could care less and so you end up with political "parties" that exist only in that location. Yeah, you can run as an independent IF you get enough signatures to get past the majors suing to have you removed for various reasons and get past the minimum limit to go ON the ballot. There's also filing fees and a raft of Simon says stuff to get on there. Joe Schmoe usually doesn't have a deep enough wallet to play though.Now in a place like NYC, I can imagine it's damned near impossible. But get together enough people and enough balls and you can do it. Jimmy McMillin ran against Prince Andrew and Carl Fuckwad in the last "goober natorial" race ... and lost. But he made it and that's amazing in its own right. It sure ain't easy. And since I wasn't about to vote for either of the other two toadies, I voted for Jimmy as a protest. |
